Discussion:
FOSDEM'15 - let us propose a D dev room!!!

Hi all!

Being the largest European Open Source Conference, FOSDEM takes
place in Brussels and attracts with more than 400 lectures every
year over 5000 hackers - many core contributors of the worlds
leading open source projects. FOSDEM 2015 will take place on
Saturday 31 January and Sunday 1 February 2015.

I had a talk about LDC in the LLVM dev room this year
(https://archive.fosdem.org/2014/schedule/event/ldccompiler/)
which was much fun.

The call for participation is now announced!

I think we should propose a D dev room for FOSDEM'15. Besides
being a nice place to meet some D people, this would also give us
a lot of attention in the open source world. There is always
press about this event.

What needs to be done? We have to submit a proposal for a dev
room until September 15. If the proposal is accepted then we
should have a call for papers, keynotes, lightning talks etc.
From these proposals the schedule has to be created. The schedule
should be published around January, I guess.
From my understanding, the main team organizes the rooms,
beamers, video recording etc.
In order to distribute the work a small team (3 persons?) will be
needed.

What do you think? Anybody willing to help me to create the
proposal and the schedule and moderate the event?

If the dev room proposal will be accepted I really like to see
Walter and Andrei as keynote speakers!!!

Regards,
Kai

Sounds very interesting, it is a good opportunity to effectively
do small european DConf without bothering about many of
organizational details. I will forward this to colleagues and
report shortly.

Ok, it is yet to be discussed how many speakers we may send there
but you can definitely count me in for helping with any
organizational details. What needs to be done by September the
15th deadline?

Thank you!

The proposal must be submitted by this time.

The annoucement states:
"Developer room proposals should be emailed to
devrooms at fosdem.org and be as detailed as possible. In
particular, coordinators should indicate their affinity with the
topic being proposed and provide a rough idea of the content they
plan to schedule."

IMHO the content can be talks, ranging from user experience to
technical topics or how to participate. Or something like a live
discussion ("to GC or not to GC" ;-) ). To get as much input as
possible from the community, I would start a call for talks here
after the proposal is accepted.

If you look at the LLVM dev room: they had 11 talks of different
length and an introduction. Maybe this could guide us...

Kai

Does the original proposal need to already include all the talk
list and details? That can be a bit challenging..

No. The LLVM people started a call for talks after the proposal
was accepted. But we need a clear idea of the topics we like to
have in our schedule.

This is a very good idea.

Moreover, going to Brussels from Europe is like ten times less
expensive for Europeans than going to California, so I think you
can count on D enthusiasts to come :)

If there's a strong D community in Europe I could look into holding the
next DConf at Facebook London. A kind of "proof" would be awesome. -- Andrei

If you look at DConf 2013, there were a lot of talks from
European people, especially from Germany which is not too far
away.

What do you think? Anybody willing to help me to create the

Count me in. I'll unfortunately not be able to spend a lot of
time on this before the September deadline, but I can definitely
help with preparations afterwards if the proposal is accepted.
Feel free to drop me a line regarding the proposal or so even
before that, though – I just can't promise to reply promptly.

Cheers,
David

Hi David!

Great! Thank you.

The part "coordinators should indicate their affinity with the
topic" seems to be easily explained...

Same here. Dusseldorf is quite close and I attended FOSDEM a few
times.

I am just not sure if I will be available by then.

Like every year, we received quite a lot more proposals than we
have
rooms at our disposal. Unfortunately, we were not able to
schedule your
proposed room this year.
The list of accepted rooms can be found on our website. We hope
you'll
agree that we have an interesting lineup despite the absence of
the room
you proposed. If the content you intended to schedule in a
dedicated
developer room fits in one of the accepted rooms, please submit
it there
when the CFP is announced.

Don't know if something related to D may fit one of accepted
devrooms.

Smalltalk is still heavily used in education thanks to Squeak and Pharo.

Not to mention the research papers that every now and then come out
regarding how to improve JIT in dynamic languages or doing source
control in image based systems.

FOSDEM has been hosting Smalltalk for quite a few years now.
